RENOVATION - RECONFIGURATION TOWN HALL & OCMW BUILDING

The project concerns the reconversion of the Town Hall in Auderghem into Welzijnshuis, Town Hall and Community Centre. Today, together with the Cultural Centre, the building forms a powerful symbol within the urban structure of Auderghem. With our design proposal, we want to underline this strong image and strip the building of its internal complexities. In doing so, we aim to preserve the existing structure as much as possible and only intervene where we see improvement. We looked for specific interventions that would make the building more clear, readable and lighter. Not the programme, but the existing structure was guiding. After all, the infill should be flexible and easy to change over time. By means of voids and vistas, the rigid concrete structure is opened up from the inside so that daylight can penetrate deep into the building and perspectives are created throughout. Each house will have its own recognisable entrance and identity. The separation of public and private entrances creates clear, separate flows in the building. The underground car park will be halved so that a green, hilly park with tall trees can be created on Vorstlaan. The square in front of the building can thus become a meaningful place.
